Boiler-works and ironworks were created to produce farmyard tools and instruments, such as food bowls or troughs, as well as domestic utensils. There were, for example, trammel hooks to hang cauldrons, three-leg saucepans and stockpots to cook in embers, andirons on which steel baking trays and roasting pans laid to cook in the hearth of the chimney.
In an area of Le Val d’Ajol called “Faymont”, five artisans gathered and created the manufactory of Faymont. At that time, de Buyer family owned forges, wire drawing and rolling mills. The manufactory of Faymont became a customer of ironmasters de Buyer who supplied it with raw materials.
De Buyer family acquired its client from Faymont, that way expanding its patrimony. Alfred de Buyer, who had just completed his engineering degree, took the lead of the manufactory.
There was a huge investments and expansion period, surfing the wave of the industrial revolution. The plant size has been increased tenfold, water power was used to generate energy, the plant entered into the industrial era. Creation of the first published catalogue under the name “Manufacture de Faymont” named after the place where the factory is located.
Alfred de Buyer died. As his sons were too young to run the company, his spouse took the lead of the manufactory of Faymont until her death in 1917. Then the oldest daughter, 19-year-old Marcelle, took over the family company and worked very hard to finance her brothers’ and sisters’ studies.
Alfred’s son, Amaury, who had just completed his engineering degree and his military service, started managing the manufactory instead of his sister.
Arnaud, Amaury’s older son, joint the company and handled the family business after his father’s death in 1974. He ran the company until 1988.

Hervé de Buyer started managing the manufactory instead of his brother. Thanks to his faith, his willpower and his strength of conviction, Hervé de Buyer took lead of the company. Then, he created a new brand: “de Buyer”, and considerably improved the marketing function.
Hervé de Buyer decided to stop delivering De Buyer products to supermarkets since this distribution channel were tarnishing the company’s brand image. As a result, De Buyer Company turned away from the consumer market until 2002, and got rid off 50% of its turnover. This was a risky gamble but the company succeeded well in meeting this challenge. Indeed, de Buyer got closer to restaurateurs, pastry-making and culinary schools.

The De Buyer Company invested in extending and updating its production site. The plans involve demolishing old buildings to rebuild a new 3400 m2 production area, complete with a 3-floor 1150 m2 building for changing rooms, offices and a terraced show room.Long months of work and an unprecedented investment with the aim of rationalising production to increase productivity and develop new products.Construction will reach completion in 2014.
‘ORIGINE FRANCE GARANTIE’, label pending: De Buyer Company began the process to obtain the GUARANTEED FRENCH ORIGIN label for its production range. Examining all the ranges is a long process, and will continue to the end of 2014.The first de Buyer products which obtained this label are the Mandolines and the supple pastry moulds Elastomoule.
